Check the renewal price on any .xyz

.xyz is often advertised with a very cheap first year. Some registrars sell it for a few dollars up front, then renew it at several times that price. The number that matters is what you’ll pay every year after.

Here it’s $42 for the first year and $42 at renewal. If you’re comparing, add up the first year and every renewal for as long as you plan to keep the name.

A .xyz suits side projects, portfolios, events and experiments, where the name matters more than the extension. For an Australian business’s main site, .com.au or .au is usually the clearer choice.

What the price includes

  • DNS hosting with A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, NS, SRV and CAA records, plus email and URL forwarding
  • Plain-text renewal reminders 30 days, 7 days and 1 day before expiry — they stop if you renew or tell us not to
  • Passkey and two-factor sign-in, and a transfer code you can reveal yourself any time
  • Registered through an accredited wholesale registrar partner, named as the registrar in public WHOIS

Questions about .xyz

Is .xyz a legitimate domain extension?
Yes. It’s an ICANN generic top-level domain, added to the root zone in 2014 and run by XYZ.COM LLC. Alphabet, Google’s parent company, uses abc.xyz.
Why do some sites sell .xyz for a dollar or two?
That’s a first-year promotion. The renewal price is often much higher, so check it before you buy.
Who can register a .xyz?
Anyone, anywhere. There are no eligibility rules or residency requirements.
Can I transfer a cheap first-year .xyz to Chill Domains?
Yes, once it’s old enough. Under ICANN’s Transfer Policy, a registrar can refuse a transfer for 60 days after registration or a previous transfer (ICANN is moving this to 30 days). After that, start a transfer: no transfer fee, and it includes a year’s renewal at $42.

Ready when you are

Bring your domains over, or start a new one.

Pop in a domain you already own and start the transfer in a few minutes. You’ll need its transfer code (auth code) from your current registrar. There’s no transfer fee: a .au transfer is free unless it’s within 90 days of expiry, when it includes the $20 renewal. New domain instead? Search for it and pay by card at checkout.
