.org or .org.au for an Australian not-for-profit?

.org is widely used by charities, community groups and open-source projects, but owning one says nothing about your legal status. Nobody checks what kind of organisation you are when you register.

.org.au is the Australian version. It has auDA eligibility rules for not-for-profit organisations, so it tells visitors where you are and what you are. A .org suits international work, or groups that don’t meet auDA’s rules.

Many Australian organisations hold both and forward one to the other. URL forwarding is included.

What the price includes

  • DNS hosting with A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, NS, SRV and CAA records, plus email and URL forwarding
  • Plain-text renewal reminders 30 days, 7 days and 1 day before expiry — they stop if you renew or tell us not to
  • Passkey and two-factor sign-in, and a transfer code you can reveal yourself any time
  • Registered through an accredited wholesale registrar partner, named as the registrar in public WHOIS

Questions about .org

Do I need to be a charity or not-for-profit to register a .org?
No. There are no eligibility rules for .org. Businesses, individuals and projects of any kind can register one.
Does a .org make us look like a registered charity?
It may suggest a cause, but it proves nothing. In Australia, registered charity status comes from the ACNC, not from a domain name.
Should an Australian not-for-profit use .org or .org.au?
If you’re eligible for .org.au, it’s the clearer local signal. A .org suits international work or groups that don’t meet auDA’s rules. You can hold both and forward one to the other.
How long does a .org transfer take?
Usually 5–7 days once the auth code from your current registrar is accepted. Under ICANN’s Transfer Policy, a .org can be refused a transfer for 60 days after registration or a previous transfer (ICANN is moving this to 30 days). Start a transfer when you’re ready.

Ready when you are

Bring your domains over, or start a new one.

Pop in a domain you already own and start the transfer in a few minutes. You’ll need its transfer code (auth code) from your current registrar. There’s no transfer fee: a .au transfer is free unless it’s within 90 days of expiry, when it includes the $20 renewal. New domain instead? Search for it and pay by card at checkout.
