John Walsh-Green

John founded Digital Greenhouse in 2011 and still runs it, today as a small team led from Sydney. He has spent 15-plus years building websites, e-commerce and cloud software for Australian start-ups, small businesses and growing teams. Chill Domains is the domain side of that work: a plainer way to buy and keep a domain name, without the cheap-first-year-then-pricier-renewal routine. Read John’s CV.

Is Chill Domains an accredited registrar?

No. Chill Domains is a reseller and doesn’t hold registrar accreditation itself. Every domain you buy from us is registered through an auDA- and ICANN-accredited wholesale registrar partner. That partner, not Chill Domains, appears as the registrar on your domain’s public WHOIS/RDAP record, and anyone can look it up.

What that means for you

  • Your domain is held under the same auDA rules (for .au names) and ICANN rules (for .com, .net, .org and other generic extensions) as at any other registrar.
  • We handle the sign-up, payment, reminders, dashboard and support. The accredited registrar handles the registry side.
  • You can leave whenever you like. The transfer code is self-serve: sign in and reveal it any time. There’s no transfer-out fee and no retention call.

Your rights as a domain holder

For .au names, the rules are auDA’s .au Domain Administration Rules: Licensing. For generic extensions such as .com, ICANN publishes a plain summary: Registrants’ Benefits and Responsibilities.

Why the pricing can stay simple

Digital Greenhouse has no outside investors. There’s no venture capital to pay back and nobody asking why renewals aren’t earning more this quarter.

Chill Domains is still a business. Each extension has a published list price that includes our margin over the wholesale cost, and that margin is how the service pays its way. It doesn’t need a cheap first year, pre-ticked add-ons or an upsell maze to work, so we don’t use them.

Promises, checked

What we say, and what backs it

A promise is only worth something if the product actually works that way. Here’s how each one is backed today.

What we say How the product backs it
Renewal costs the same as the first year Renewals are charged at the current list price for that extension, the same price a new customer pays that day. If a list price ever changes, it changes for everyone at the same time, and the reminder email shows the current price before you renew. Some registries charge more for certain premium names; checkout shows the first-year and renewal price before you pay.
No fake urgency Plain-text renewal reminders 30 days, 7 days and 1 day before expiry. They stop if you renew or tell us not to. No countdown timers, no red banners.
No surprise charges Auto-renew is off by default. If you turn it on for a domain (from your dashboard, or by ticking the box when you pay), we email you the price before every renewal and charge the card you saved about 14 days before expiry. Otherwise you renew with a card payment from your dashboard when a reminder arrives.
No transfer fee A .au transfer in is free unless it’s within 90 days of expiry, when it includes the renewal ($20 for a year). A .com or other gTLD transfer includes one year’s renewal at the normal price.
Leaving is easy The transfer code is self-serve: sign in and reveal it any time. No transfer-out fee, no retention call. We email the registrant whenever the code is revealed or reset, so a change you didn’t make doesn’t go unnoticed.
WHOIS privacy included Included at no extra cost for extensions that support it; switch it on in your dashboard. .au names don’t offer it: under auDA policy the registrant name and ABN/ACN are public.
DNS hosting included A DNS editor for A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, NS, SRV and CAA records, in the same dashboard as everything else.
No advertising tracking No advertising pixels, no remarketing audiences, and we never sell your details. We use Google Analytics 4 for aggregate visit statistics.

What you can do in the dashboard

Everything below is included with every domain you hold with Chill Domains, and all of it is self-serve.

  • DNS editor for A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, NS, SRV and CAA records.
  • Email forwarding, for example hello@yourname.com.au to the inbox you already use. It forwards mail; it isn’t a mailbox.
  • URL forwarding with 301 (permanent) or 302 (temporary) redirects.
  • Transfer lock and transfer codes: lock or unlock a domain, and reveal or reset its transfer code yourself.
  • WHOIS privacy on or off, for extensions that support it.
  • DNSSEC: add the DS records from your DNS provider, for extensions that support it.
  • Glue records (child nameservers), if you run your own nameservers.
  • Bulk tools to lock, unlock or renew many domains at once.
  • Sign-in security: sign in with an emailed link or a passkey, and add two-factor codes from an authenticator app.

Ready when you are

Bring your domains over, or start a new one.

Pop in a domain you already own and start the transfer in a few minutes. You’ll need its transfer code (auth code) from your current registrar. There’s no transfer fee: a .au transfer is free unless it’s within 90 days of expiry, when it includes the $20 renewal. New domain instead? Search for it and pay by card at checkout.
