Before you settle for the .net

.net was originally meant for network providers, but that was never a registration rule. Today anyone can register a .net for any kind of site.

If you’re taking the .net because the .com is gone, look at who owns the .com first. People type .com out of habit, so some visitors and some email may end up with whoever holds it.

For an Australian business, .com.au or the direct .au is often a better fallback than .net, if you’re eligible. You can check any domain’s WHOIS record with our free lookup tools.

What the price includes

  • DNS hosting with A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, NS, SRV and CAA records, plus email and URL forwarding
  • Plain-text renewal reminders 30 days, 7 days and 1 day before expiry — they stop if you renew or tell us not to
  • Passkey and two-factor sign-in, and a transfer code you can reveal yourself any time
  • Registered through an accredited wholesale registrar partner, named as the registrar in public WHOIS

Questions about .net

Is .net only for internet or network companies?
No. It was originally meant for network providers, but there are no eligibility rules. Anyone can register a .net for any kind of site.
Should I register the .net if the .com is taken?
Check who owns the .com first. People type .com by habit, so some visitors and email may go to the other owner. If that’s an active business in your field, pick a different name or an Australian extension instead.
Is WHOIS privacy switched on for a .net?
Not automatically. It’s included at no extra cost, and you switch it on in your dashboard once the domain is registered. With it on, your contact details are masked in public WHOIS.
How long does a .net transfer take?
Usually 5–7 days once the auth code from your current registrar is accepted. Under ICANN’s Transfer Policy, a .net can be refused a transfer for 60 days after registration or a previous transfer (ICANN is moving this to 30 days). Start a transfer when you’re ready.

Ready when you are

Bring your domains over, or start a new one.

Pop in a domain you already own and start the transfer in a few minutes. You’ll need its transfer code (auth code) from your current registrar. There’s no transfer fee: a .au transfer is free unless it’s within 90 days of expiry, when it includes the $20 renewal. New domain instead? Search for it and pay by card at checkout.
