How a domain transfer to Chill Domains works

Transferring a domain changes its registrar, not its owner: you move where you pay for and manage the name. There’s no transfer fee. A .au transfer within 90 days of expiry includes its renewal; otherwise it’s free. A .com or other gTLD transfer includes one year’s renewal at the normal price.

  1. Unlock the domain at your current registrar, if it has a transfer lock switched on.
  2. Get the transfer code (auth code / EPP code / authInfo) from your current registrar. Every transfer needs one, including .au. For .au names you can also request it from auDA at pw.auda.org.au; it’s sent to the registrant contact email on record. Lost access to that inbox? Read our guide to getting your .com.au domain password.
  3. Enter the domain above, then your contact details and the code. For .au names we also ask for the registrant name and, if you have one, the ABN or ACN.
  4. Pay any renewal that’s due by card through Stripe. Before anything is charged, we check with the registry that the transfer can go ahead and read its expiry date. A .au more than 90 days from expiry has nothing to pay: you just confirm the transfer.
  5. We submit the transfer and email you once it’s submitted. The domain appears in your dashboard when it completes.

A registrar transfer normally keeps the domain’s current nameservers, so a website and email hosted elsewhere keep working. If your current registrar also hosts your DNS records, copy them before you start: their DNS service can stop once the domain leaves.

How long does a domain transfer take?

.au transfers usually complete within a few hours once the code is accepted, although auDA says a transfer can take up to three days to take effect. Transfers of .com, .net, .org and other gTLDs usually take 5–7 days, because your current registrar gets a few days to respond before the registry completes the move.

What does a transfer cost?

No transfer fee. If your .au (.com.au, .au, .net.au, .org.au or .id.au) is within 90 days of expiry, the transfer includes its renewal: $20 for a year, added to its expiry date. Otherwise the transfer is free and your expiry date carries over; you renew later at the normal price, and we remind you before it’s due. For .com, .net, .org and other gTLDs, a transfer includes one year’s renewal at the normal price, for example $28 for a .com (AUD, including GST), added to your existing expiry date. After that you renew at the same list price each year. We can transfer the extensions on our price list.

Transferring a lot of domains?

If you have a bunch of domains and want to lower your renewal fees, you don’t need to transfer them one at a time. Email us at info@digitalgreenhouse.com.au with the list and we’ll arrange a bulk transfer.

.co and .io are country-code domains with their own registry rules.

When can’t a domain be transferred yet?

  • It was registered or last transferred too recently. For .com, .net, .org and other gTLDs, ICANN policy blocks another transfer for 60 days after registration or a previous transfer (ICANN is moving this to 30 days). This ICANN rule doesn’t apply to .au names.
  • It’s locked at your current registrar.
  • The transfer code is missing, mistyped or out of date.
  • It has expired, or is in redemption or pending delete. Renew or restore it at your current registrar first.
  • For .au names, it’s the subject of a complaint, review or dispute under auDA’s rules.

Can I move a domain away from Chill Domains later?

Yes. Your transfer code is self-serve: sign in and reveal it any time from your dashboard. There’s no transfer-out fee and no retention call.
