A game
Whack-a-Fee
Whack-a-mole in Jack’s backyard. Registrar tricks pop out of the lawn; bonk them before they get away and land on your bill. Three rounds, three hearts, one squeaky mallet.
Runs entirely in your browser: nothing to install, no account, and your best score stays in this browser.
How to play
Click or tap a trick while it’s out of its hole. On a keyboard, the nine holes are Q W E (back row), A S D (middle) and Z X C (front), or 7 8 9 / 4 5 6 / 1 2 3 on the number pad. Each round lasts 25 seconds and gets a little quicker. Anything that gets away goes on the bill in the corner of the yard.
You have three hearts. You lose one for bonking something you should have left alone: Jack’s tennis ball (your domain), or the plain renewal reminder. Lose all three and Jack needs a lie-down.
The tricks in the yard, and what we do instead
- Pre-ticked add-ons. A “website builder”, a “privacy upgrade” or “site insurance”, already ticked at checkout. At Chill, the checkout has the domain. That’s it.
- The fake countdown. “Price expires in 4:59.” At Chill, the price is the price. Take a week to think about it.
- The intro price. Cheap for year one, then the real price at renewal. At Chill, renewal is the same list price as the first year.
- The scare email. “FINAL NOTICE” in red. Our renewal reminders are plain text and stop as soon as you renew. That’s the cream envelope in the game, which is why you shouldn’t bonk it.
- The auto-renew box. Ticked for you, tucked away at the bottom. At Chill, auto-renew is off by default and never pre-ticked.
- The exit fee and the retention call. A charge, or a call, before you can leave. At Chill, sign in and reveal your transfer code any time. No retention call. No exit charge.
Each one matches a written promise on our How it works page, and there are more on our dark patterns page. A .com.au at Chill is $20 a year inc GST and renews at the same $20 list price (see every extension’s price). The prices on the tricks in the game are made up.
