A game
Just the Domain, Please
The goal: register just the domain. Jack wants jackruns.com.au for one year, and nothing else. The checkout wants to sell him a bundle, a website builder, “protection” and three years up front. You have two minutes, until the sale ends.
YourRegistrar is made up, and so are its prices. The tricks are real. Runs entirely in your browser: there’s nothing to type, Jack’s details are filled in for him, nothing you choose in the game is sent anywhere (the page itself counts visits with Google Analytics, like the rest of our site), and your best score stays on this device.
How to play
Jack has searched for jackruns.com.au at YourRegistrar, and it’s available. Your goal is to register it, and only it: one year of jackruns.com.au, with no add-ons, no free trials, no extra years and no auto-renew. Get it from the search page to a paid order in six steps: search, term, cart, the website-builder page, an account, and the checkout.
Along the way, things get added to the cart, boxes come pre-ticked, and every “Remove” opens a pop-up asking if you’re sure. Read each button before you press it: the coloured one is rarely the one you want, and one pop-up has its yes and no the wrong way round. Anything you miss stays in the cart, so you can still take it out later, if you have time.
The sale clock gives you two minutes. Pay with only the domain in the cart to win, and the time left adds to your score. At the end you get YourRegistrar’s invoice for Jack’s first year, next to what the same domain costs at Chill Domains, and a list of every trap on the way.
The traps in the game, and what we do instead
Most traps in the checkout are dark patterns we’ve collected from domain carts, some with real case files.
Extras in the cart
“Privacy” and “protection” added for you, and a bundle button bigger than the one that buys just the domain.
At Chill: the checkout has the domain. That’s it. No pre-ticked add-ons.
“Are you sure?” pop-ups
Remove an extra and a warning asks if you’re sure, with the option to keep it as the filled, coloured button. Sometimes twice.
At Chill: nothing goes in your cart unless you put it there, and Remove takes it out in one click, with no “are you sure?”.
Free trials that turn into paid plans
A website builder “free for 1 month”, with the way out in tiny grey type at the bottom of the page.
At Chill: we don’t sell trials or website builders, and our optional mailbox is never pre-ticked.
Intro pricing, and three years picked for you
$0.99 for the first year, and a longer term already selected, so you pay the renewal price up front.
At Chill: one list price, the same to register and to renew. A .com.au is $20 a year inc GST, and renews at $20, and the term starts at one year unless you choose more.
An account before the full price
“Create an account to see your total”, with pre-ticked offers and a box worded so that unticking it means yes.
At Chill: our cart shows the total, inc GST, before you sign in or create anything.
Prices before GST
Every line in the cart before GST, and the 10% only on the last screen.
At Chill: every price we charge is shown including GST, from the first page you see to the checkout.
Auto-renew tricks
Auto-renew for three years, pre-ticked, and a warning about domain squatters when you untick it.
At Chill: auto-renew is off by default and never pre-ticked. Turn it on and we email you the exact price at least 7 days before we charge.
Fake countdowns and “was” prices
A sale clock, “3 other people are looking”, and a struck-out price to make the deal look bigger.
At Chill: no timers and no struck-out “was” price. The price is the price. Take a week to think about it.
“Accept all” cookies
A big “Accept all”, and “Reject all” hidden behind “Manage options”.
At Chill: no cookie banner to fight, because there are no advertising pixels or remarketing audiences. We use Google Analytics 4 for aggregate visit statistics; our privacy policy says how to opt out.
