A rhythm game

Jack’s Nap

Jack is asleep. YourRegistrar wants his attention. Phones ping and inboxes chime in time with the music: snooze each one on the beat and keep him asleep.

YourRegistrar is made up, and so are its messages. The nagging is real. Runs entirely in your browser: nothing to install, no account, and your best score stays on this device.

How to play

Jack has registered jackruns.com.au and lain down for a nap. YourRegistrar has his mobile number and his email address, and it sends its messages in time with the band.

When the phone pings, snooze it on the next beat. When the inbox chimes, snooze it two beats later. An outline closes in on each device and meets it on the beat you’re aiming for, and the dots under Jack count the beats. Snooze too early or tap a device that isn’t going off and you’ll jostle him a little.

From the third round YourRegistrar also calls. The phone rings with a trill; press on the next beat and keep holding while the outline fills round the phone, until the call rings out two beats later. Let go too soon and it goes through to voicemail, which counts as a miss. In the last round you’ll be holding a call on one side while the inbox chimes on the other.

Miss one and it rings out, Jack stirs, and his nap meter drops. Empty the meter and he wakes up, and you replay that round. Twelve in a row and Jack drops into deep sleep: every snooze scores double until you slip. There are four rounds: the welcome series, renewal season, the retention calls and a flash-sale weekend, each a little busier than the last.

The music is the same generated jazz band that plays on Chill with Jack, with a lo-fi beat on top. It’s made in your browser as you play, so no two games sound quite the same.

The nagging, and what we do instead

Designers have a name for a product that keeps interrupting you to get you to do something: nagging. These are the versions domain customers get, and our written promises about them.

  • Notifications about a thing you already bought

A welcome series, “complete your profile”, rate-us requests and upsells, by text, push alert and email.

At Chill: we don’t currently send marketing emails. If we ever send product news, it’s off unless you turn it on.

  • Renewal nags

Reminders months before expiry, “FINAL NOTICE” in red, and the same message nine times.

At Chill: three plain-text reminders, 30, 7 and 1 day before expiry, each with the current price. They stop if you renew or tell us not to.

  • Retention calls

“A quick call about your account” when you try to leave, or a call back when you don’t answer the emails.

At Chill: no retention call. Sign in and reveal your transfer code any time, with no exit charge.

  • Fake urgency

Flash sales that keep getting extended, countdowns, and “only 2 left at this price”.

At Chill: the price is the price. A .com.au is $20 a year inc GST and renews at $20.

Is YourRegistrar a real company?
No. YourRegistrar and its messages are made up for the game (it’s the same villain as in Jack’s Renewal Run and our ad The Breakup). The nagging is real, though, and you’ll find versions of it across the domain and subscription industry.
Can I play it on my phone?
Yes. Tap the left half of the picture to snooze the phone and the right half to snooze the inbox; when both go off together, tap both. For a call, keep your finger on the left half until it rings out. Turning the phone sideways gives you a bigger room. On an iPhone, check the silent switch so you can hear the music.
Can I play without sound?
Yes, by watching the outlines close in on each device and the four beat dots under Jack. It’s harder that way: the music is what tells you when the next beat is coming.
My snoozes keep coming up “late”. What’s wrong?
Usually the sound is reaching you a little after the game plays it, which is common with Bluetooth headphones and some TVs. Pause the game and nudge the timing offset up (+20 to +40 ms is typical) until your snoozes land on “Perfect”. The setting stays in this browser. At the end of each round the game also tells you how early or late you were on average.
Is anything recorded or sent anywhere?
Nothing from the game. It runs entirely in your browser, and your best score and your sound and timing settings stay in this browser only. Like the rest of our site, the page counts visits with Google Analytics (see our privacy policy).
Is Jack real?
Very. He’s a retired greyhound, and napping is his best event. Meet Jack, or watch him nap through a rainy night.

Ready when you are

Bring your domains over, or start a new one.

Pop in a domain you already own and start the transfer in a few minutes. You’ll need its transfer code (auth code) from your current registrar. There’s no transfer fee: a .au transfer is free unless it’s within 90 days of expiry, when it includes the $20 renewal. New domain instead? Search for it and pay by card at checkout.
