Using a .app for your app

Google Registry opened .app to everyone on 8 May 2018. Browsers treat every .app address as HTTPS-only, so your landing page needs a valid TLS certificate before it will load. Free Let’s Encrypt certificates work, and you can check yours with our SSL lookup tool.

A .app is a natural home for an app’s landing page, support page and privacy policy — the pages app store listings usually link to.

The HTTPS rule only affects websites. Email and other DNS records work normally. If you want to forward a .app to an app store listing, check the forward is served over HTTPS for your domain before you rely on it.

What the price includes

  • DNS hosting with A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, NS, SRV and CAA records, plus email and URL forwarding
  • Plain-text renewal reminders 30 days, 7 days and 1 day before expiry — they stop if you renew or tell us not to
  • Passkey and two-factor sign-in, and a transfer code you can reveal yourself any time
  • Registered through an accredited wholesale registrar partner, named as the registrar in public WHOIS

Questions about .app

Does a .app domain have to be used for an app?
No. There are no eligibility rules, so you can use a .app for any website. Every .app site does need HTTPS, though.
Why do I get a connection error on my new .app site?
Browsers load .app addresses over HTTPS only. If the server has no valid TLS certificate for your domain yet, the page won’t load. Add a certificate (Let’s Encrypt is free) and it will.
What’s the difference between .app and .dev?
Both are Google Registry extensions with the same HTTPS-only rule. Here a .app is $44 a year and a .dev is $37. .app is aimed at apps and products; .dev at developers and technology projects.

Ready when you are

Bring your domains over, or start a new one.

Pop in a domain you already own and start the transfer in a few minutes. You’ll need its transfer code (auth code) from your current registrar. There’s no transfer fee: a .au transfer is free unless it’s within 90 days of expiry, when it includes the $20 renewal. New domain instead? Search for it and pay by card at checkout.
