Jack’s Mini Golf

Seven holes on a course run by YourRegistrar, and every hole is one of its tricks: pre-ticked add-ons, a 99-cent windmill, a countdown that always comes back, bumpers that fill your cart, an auto-renew conveyor belt, lookalike invoice flags and a motel you can’t check out of.

YourRegistrar is made up, and so are its prices. The tricks are real. Runs entirely in your browser: nothing to install, no account, and your best round stays on this device.

How to play

Jack wants one thing: jackputts.com.au, the domain, and nothing else. Sink the ball on each hole in as few strokes as you can. The course is par 20.

Drag back from anywhere on the course and let go, like a slingshot: the further back you drag, the harder the putt. Roll into a trap and it goes on Jack’s bill with a penalty stroke, and the ball goes back to where you hit it from. The coral bumpers cost you just for touching them (the green ones only ask if you’re sure). Ten strokes on a hole and YourRegistrar closes your ticket.

On a phone the course turns on its side to fit the screen. At the end you get your scorecard and YourRegistrar’s invoice, itemised, next to what the same two years cost at Chill Domains.

The holes, and what we do instead

Every hole is a dark pattern that domain customers run into for real. Each one matches a written promise on our How it works page.

  • 1. The checkout: pre-ticked add-ons

A “privacy upgrade”, “site insurance” or a “DNS speed pack” already ticked at checkout.

At Chill: the checkout has the domain. That’s it.

  • 2. The intro price: the windmill

A cheap first year, then a renewal several times higher, and a “loyalty tax” on existing customers.

At Chill: renewal is the same list price as the first year. A .com.au is $20 a year inc GST and renews at $20.

  • 3. Act now! A fake countdown

“DEAL ENDS IN 0:03”, to rush you into a longer term than you came for. Then the timer starts again.

At Chill: the price is the price. Take a week to think about it.

  • 4. Cart sneak: the bumpers

Extras slipped into your cart, or “recommended” so loudly you click them by accident.

At Chill: nothing is added to your cart without your asking.

  • 5. Auto-renew: the conveyor belt

Auto-renew switched on by default, for a multi-year term, with the off switch buried in the settings.

At Chill: auto-renew is off by default and never pre-ticked. Turn it on and we email you the exact price at least 7 days before we charge.

  • 6. Spot the real one: lookalike invoices

“FINAL NOTICE” in red, and lookalike “renewal invoices” from companies you’ve never dealt with. Here’s how to spot a fake renewal notice.

At Chill: plain-text reminders, and they stop as soon as you renew.

  • 7. The roach motel: getting out

Easy to check in, hard to check out: “are you sure?” on repeat, offers you didn’t ask for, and a fee on the way out.

At Chill: turning auto-renew off is one click, and you can reveal your transfer code any time. No exit charge, no retention call.

Is YourRegistrar a real company?
No. YourRegistrar and its prices are made up for the game (it’s the same villain as in Jack’s Renewal Run and our ad The Breakup). The tricks are real, though, and you’ll find versions of them across the domain and subscription industry.
Can I play it on my phone?
Yes. Put your finger anywhere on the course and drag back, then let go. On a phone the course turns on its side so the holes fit the screen, and the full-screen button gives you more room. On an iPhone, check the silent switch if you want the sound effects.
Is anything recorded or sent anywhere?
Nothing from the game. It runs entirely in your browser, and your best round and sound setting stay in this browser only. Like the rest of our site, the page counts visits with Google Analytics (see our privacy policy).
Is Jack real?
Very. He’s a retired greyhound, and these days he saves the running for when it counts. The caddie’s cap is new. Meet Jack, or watch him nap through a rainy night.

Ready when you are

Bring your domains over, or start a new one.

Pop in a domain you already own and start the transfer in a few minutes. You’ll need its transfer code (auth code) from your current registrar. There’s no transfer fee: a .au transfer is free unless it’s within 90 days of expiry, when it includes the $20 renewal. New domain instead? Search for it and pay by card at checkout.
